On a Wed a friend of mine called me up to see about me going to his wedding, which was the following Saturday; the 10th of September. Oh yes, and I was to be a groomsman as well! Sweet, I don’t think I’ve been one of those before. The wedding was to be in a town in the far edges of upstate New York, called Plattsburgh.

On the way I stopped by Albany… though only for about 30 minutes to see if a particular bike I spied on Craigslist was still available, a nice old beautiful looking Raleigh with rod brakes; unfortunately, it was not available anymore… still a pleasant detour anyway. Definitely a place I want to explore some more. I have to say I really thought Albany was quite beautiful… though, the part I saw did not have much in the way of biking. So on with my trek up north through the Adirondacks… which of course, were beautiful as the sun was setting down for the evening; and on I drove on through the night.

The next day was spent learning some of this Super Bass song and Thriller dance number for the reception, getting a tux and a small tour of the town of Plattsburgh. Of course we rocked the dancing… so I don’t really need to say much about that. Plattsburgh itself is really a pleasantly located town right on Lake Champlain, across from Burlington Vermont. It has had its bout with quite a bit of flooding earlier in the year and was working on recovering parts of the town still, though downtown looked pretty much untouched… it is a little up from the lake. It had that nice old small town America Main Street feel in the downtown area with a few impressive statues. Though, looking at the town through Cycle Chap glasses, what caught my eye and impressed me more than anything was the bike paths all over the place. Now I know bike paths are not anything unheard of, but the amounts of them in a city that has a population of just under twenty thousand really impressed me. I have not seen anything this impressive in any of the towns around Boston.

Plattsburgh is not only on Lake Champlain, it also has a river going through it, the Saranac River, in their downtown area. I don’t recall seeing a similar set up of a city in the U.S. with development on both sides of a river (with it being the same city, I know Boston and Cambridge have a that set up… but they are different cities). There was a great bike path up the hill above the river going through down town by their beautifully designed city hall and monument out front overlooking the river and lake. The path eventually wound its way down to the river below through a nice wooded section, right downtown still though. I think the city has a great opportunity to build upon the natural beauty of the river and create quite an outstandingly attractive downtown.

The weekend of my friend’s wedding has a lot of history going on with it. Of course September 11th 2001, I was originally going to be in NYC for the weekend actually. Plattsburgh has it’s own little bit of history tied to that date in 1814, the battle of Plattsburgh occurred. The town on Sunday was in full swing into the celebration of the Battle. Even the transport museum had a nice display of some great old bicycles (see pictures below). In the town hall they actually had a file cabinet drawer from one of the WTC buildings and a piece of the outside of the building on display. Also it was a weekend that a great new family was created.

And yes, those are wooden wheels on that!

Also, here is a little design I came up with a week or so ago… that I hope will soon find its way in some form to a t-shirt!
